adventure story

Definition
A type of fiction that usually includes suspense, excitement, physical danger, travel to exotic settings, and an intrepid hero/heroine. In many of these respects, the adventure story is kin to the romance, but the adventure story relies on a series of exciting episodes unified by the theme of a search for a lost person, place, or object. The prototype of the form is Homer's Odyssey, in which the hero faces a series of threatening situations as he attempts to voyage home.

The adventure story is one of the staples of children's literature, such as Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883). In film, the form is a key element of the serial.
