Alcibiades

Pronunciation pronunciation key
alsiădeez

Definition
Archetype of adebauchee. Alcibiades (c. 450–404 B.C.) was an Athenian statesman and general who won notable victories at Abydos (411 B.C.) and Cyzicus (410 B.C.). His many lovers may have included Socrates, who, according to Plato's Symposium, demonstrated his tremendous self-control by spending the night with the beautiful Alcibiades without attempting to make love to him. The field marshal was the Alcibiades of his day, combining undoubted military prowess with scandalous exploits in the casinos and brothels of Paris.
