Definition 
Works of the Old and New Testament not admitted to the canon by the Catholic Church, or works rejected by Jews or Protestants for doubtful validity.

In literature, the term is applied to works whose authorship is questionable. An example of an apocryphal play is Edward III, a history play that many scholars believe was written partly by Shakespeare.
