apt/liable/likely/prone

Definition
These four adjectives mean much the same thing, but there are subtle differences between them. Apt means "having a tendency":

He is apt to lose his temper.
Apt is largely synonymous with liable (liable to leave without warning) and with prone (a system prone to failure) but distinct from likely, which means "liable in this particular instance":

The team looks likely to lose.
