Admiral of the Red

Definition 
An old term for a drunkard, whose face and nose are often red. The expression is a play on the naval term Admiral of the Red, one of the three classes of admirals in early times named from the color of their flags. In British naval engagements prior to 1864 the Admiral of the Red held the center of the line, while the Admiral of the White held the vanguard and the Admiral of the Blue held the rear.
