an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure

Definition
It often takes a lot of effort to put right something that could have been prevented with a little effort: "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. … All the old saws point up the value of heading off a problem before it reaches the pass" (Washington Times, 1997).

Proverbs expressing similar meaning: a stitch in time saves nine; prevention is better than cure; who repairs not his gutters repairs his whole house.
