an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth

Definition
Retaliation or punishment should take the same form as the original offense or crime: In a country where the justice system is based on the principle of "An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth," the death penalty is the only appropriate punishment for the crime of murder. The proverb is of biblical origin: "Eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot" (Exodus 21:24).
