Definition 
A proposition that is accompanied by a threat of violence or other "persuasion" that makes it impossible to turn down. The reference is to the 1969 Mario Puzo novel The Godfather, filmed in 1971, in which an aspiring movie actor is assured that he will get the part he wants after the director of the movie has been made "an offer he can't refuse." He didn't want to vote against his conscience, but someone made him an offer he couldn't refuse. See also Godfather The.
