age of Aquarius

Pronunciation pronunciation key
ăkwaireeăs

Definition
An astrological era in which humanity enters into a new period of peace, freedom, and understanding. For many people the phrase is linked inextricably with the hippie culture of the 1960s, specifically the opening song of the 1967 musical Hair, and has thus become a synonym for childish naivety and optimism. "This is not the age of Aquarius, as the 1960s song so misleadingly supposed: it is the age of imminent judgment" (Andrew Walker, Enemy Territory, 1988).
