Albion

Pronunciation pronunciation key
albeeăn

Definition
A poetic name for England. The name may be derived from the Latin albus (meaning "white"), or else from the Celtic alp (meaning "rock" or "crag"). In either case, the allusion is thought to be to the white cliffs of Dover, which have for centuries symbolized the English nation. "You are going out, Micawber, to this distant clime, to strengthen, not to weaken, the connexion between yourself and Albion" (Charles Dickens, David Copperfield, 1849–1850). See also perfidious Albion.
