Definition
Archetypical classical hero and man of destiny: the legendary forefather of the Romans. As described in Virgil's epic poem the Aeneid (30–19 B.C.), Aeneas was a Trojan prince, the son of Anchises and Aphrodite, who escaped the fall of Troy and embarked on a long and arduous voyage in search of a new home. In the course of his many adventures he effectively prepared the way for his descendants Romulus and Remus to found the city of Rome. "Thus he proceeded, like Aeneas with his father" (Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native, 1880, referring to Virgil's account of how Aeneas carried his old, frail father on his back out of the burning city of Troy). See also Dido and Aeneas.
