adullamite

Pronunciation pronunciation key
adulămīt

Definition
A refugee or fugitive. Adullam is identified at 1 Samuel 22:1–2 as the name of the cave in which David sought shelter when fleeing from the wrath of King Saul, being joined there by a host of other individuals seeking similar refuge: "And every one that was in distress, and every one that was in debt, and every one that was discontented, gathered themselves unto him." The term is generally reserved today for dissident members of political groups who leave to form their own cliques. It was first employed with reference to members of the British Liberal Party who withdrew to form their own group in 1866. These latter-day adullamites gathered in the lobby of the House of Commons and joined in noisy discussion of their outrage at the behavior of their cabinet colleagues.
