Adam's apple

Pronunciation pronunciation key
adămz

Definition
The visible projection of the thyroid cartilage of the larynx in the throat. According to legend, when Adam bit from the fruit of the forbidden tree a piece of the fruit lodged in his throat, and ever since men have had this visible projection from their throat in remembrance of this first sin. This incident is not, however, mentioned in the book of Genesis, and nowhere is the forbidden fruit identified as an apple. She could remember little about her assailant beyond the fact that he had bulging eyes and a prominent Adam's apple.
