Definition 
The archetypal man, especially one who is completely alone or in a state of innocence. The allusion is to the biblical Adam, who became the first man on earth. The human race as a whole has often been referred to as sons of Adam. Christ is sometimes called the new Adam, second Adam, or last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45). "But here … shut in by the stable hills, among which mere walking had the novelty of pageantry, any man could imagine himself to be Adam without the least difficulty" (Thomas Hardy, The Return of the Native, 1880).
