Definition 
A citadel within an ancient Greek city, usually housing the headquarters of the city's administrative and legislative institutions. The original Acropolis was a group of temples that surmounted the fortified hill around which the city of ancient Athens was built. Chief among these buildings was the Parthenon, dedicated to the goddess Athena. The townsfolk retreated to the acropolis, leaving the lower part of the city to be sacked by the invaders.
