Aaron's rod

Pronunciation pronunciation key
airănz

Definition
Popular name of a widespread plant (Verbascum thapsus) with woolly leaves and tall spikes of yellow flowers. The allusion is to the rod used by Aaron to perform various miracles in Egypt prior to the Exodus. According to Numbers 17:1–13, when Aaron's rod was placed among 12 rods representing the tribes of Israel in the tabernacle, it blossomed overnight and produced almonds. It was by this sign that Aaron was recognized as having the strongest claim to the priesthood. Henceforth his rod was, according to the apostle Paul, kept in the Ark of the Covenant itself. Aaron's rod is today a symbol of authority and, in the East, also of travel. Aaron's rod makes an attractive addition to any garden border. See also Aaron's serpent.
