angst

Definition
A German word meaning "dread," used by the 19th-century theologian Søren Kierkegaard to describe the combination of guilt and fear that accompanies the loss of religious faith. This sense of the word is alluded to in the last name of the protagonist of John Updike's Rabbit tetralogy—Angstrom.
